As soon as you reach 500 gold in Single Player, travel to the Inn and increase the size of your party to three people. This usually occurs before you hit the 4th morden tower in Western Greilyn Jungle.
You want to make sure that new teammate of yours gets as much xp as possible and you certainly don't want him/her to miss any boss battles that you may encounter on your journey.
