Yes, I think we all know that a highly developed character is much more desirable than a highly developed pet. And I think DSII knows that. But, as is pretty widely known DSII isn't the hardest of games, and in fact can be beaten pretty easily, it just takes time, not really skill.
That is where ds2 made pets. They decided that not all people want an easy run for their money, and thus instead of other characters who you have to split the experience with and who require more potions and equipment, they made pets, who do take equipment but they don't split all your experience up but let the challenge and variety of the game play set it.
I recommend that the first time through this game you run it with a full character line-up just to get a feel of the surroundings, knowing where things are, how things work, such like that, then if you want more challenge then move onto pets, try to beat a boss who is resistant to lightning with a lightning mage and some pets, its a bit harder.
This is just saying don't always knock the pets, they serve a purpose.
I personally choose characters over pets to for adventuring and such just because i do like the funny conversations some combinations of them have.
