First of all there are some things to know. The max level is 100 so 100 skill points from
here ...on every difficult level if you do all the quest you'll get an additional 9, so 27 if you finish the game on every difficult level. If you begin with a human
another 2 unspent points. So a total of 129 skill points (I hope I didn't forget something).
Here I wrote about the most popular builds and the one that I tested: a dual wielder (melee), a ranger with bow/crossbow, healer/ ice(natural magic),for the combat mage are varied builds/preferences. There are other good builds like: sword+ shield (natural tank), thrown weapon ranger, I didn't mention them because I didn't test those and I don't want to say nonsense, so feel free to contribute and post such builds(I’ll just add something about those in the end).
Spend your points in order to maximize the powers you use. Later in the game you'll find
items that will raise your stats more than you want and loose some skills that way...after
a limit there is useless to put points in some skills because the bonus is too
low...you'll get a minimum of 10 at all the skills you are interested in from
items...but for powers you actually need to spend those points. Here are the minimum points to distribute:
Melee( dual wielder)
Here I use 3 main powers (I wrote the requirement for level 3 on every power):
- Brutal Attack (critical strike 8)
- Waves of Force (alacrity 10, deadly strike 8, dual wield 10)
- Elemental Rage (critical strike 14, fierce renewal 12, deadly strike 12)
All make 58 skill points
Other points here are useless because I told you: you'll get items that raise every melee skill over 10(and that's more than enough)
After I maximize my powers for a while I didn't know what to do but I discovered a very useful power: invulnerability from nature magic(some times that saved my party from sure death). Then in the end all my party had it alt level 3:
- Invulnerability (arcane renewal 6, enveloping embrace 12,nurturing gifs 8)
From Ranged you could put 1-2 skills in survival or 1 in dodge (not really necessary)
So 88 point in total with this build. At the end of the veteran you are quite done; after that you can just spend the remaining skills according to the items you have or your need(more in survival if you don't have max resistance from items+ spirit embrace spell or in dodge, reinforced armor, fortitude, toughness ..etc)
Now there is another very useful power I didn’t include in the base build because for developing it you don’t use specific dual wielder abilities so maybe you don’t want to spend the extra points from the beginning:
- Whirling Strike (critical strike 12, fortitude 12, reinforced armor 12) , very useful when you are covered in enemy, till this I use Waves of Force for that kind of situations
Ranged( bow/crossbow)
- Take Aim( critical shot 8,penetrate 1)
- Thunderous Shot( biting arrow 12,far shot 8,mortal wound 5)
- Charged Shot( critical shot 14,mortal wound 12,sockwave 12)
You will also have 1 point in penetrate(required for mortal wound). Here you don’t have to spent 1 to survival and 1 to dodge because you’ll get more than enough from items with +1 ranged skill, though in the beginning you need 1 at survival.
28 more point in invulnerability will put you around 88 again
The remaining points you could spend to max some of your Ranged or in Melee ( reinforced armor, fortitude, toughness)
Nature mage (healer/ ice)
- Icicle blast (aquatic affinity 10, arctic mastery)
- Circle of Frost (natural bound 8, arctic mastery 12, freezing 12)
- Invulnerability (arcane renewal 6, enveloping embrace 12, nurturing gifs 8)
68 points here.
You could enhance your summon skill or better put some point in Combat Magic: Brilliance (for every point you get a 7% bonus in mana), Quickened Casting (3-4 point in here is enough), Arcane Fury (3-4 points)
You can put some in dodge, survival from Ranged or fortitude from Melee for some extra HP
The rest depends on your preferences
Combat Mage
I’ll put here all 3 possibilities. Every possibility has 2 specific powers + energy orb that I put in every case + invulnerability (natural ) for the 4 slots that you have for powers
Fire Mage
- Energy Orb (brilliance 8, devastation 8)
- Flame Nexus (devastation 12, ignite 5, sharing flames 8)
- Detonation (sharing flames 16, ignite 10, arcane fury 8)
54 point
Lightning Mage
- Energy Orb (brilliance 8, devastation 8)
- Chain Lightning (amplified lightning 8, arching 5, devastation 12)
- Gathered Bolt (amplified lightning 14, arcane fury 6, quickened casting 12)
57 points
Death Mage
- Energy Orb (brilliance 8, devastation 8)
- Harvest soul (devastation 10, grim necromancy 12, vampirism 10)
- Corrosive Eruption (arcane fury 4, debilitation 12, grim necromancy 10)
56 points
If you want to have all your combat mage powers at max you’ll require 119 points from the 129 available but this is actually a nonsense
The rest of the point spend in fortitude, survival, dodge, absorption and natural bound
And now in the end I’ll try to guess 2 more configuration
Melee (sword+shield)
- Brutal Attack (critical strike 8)
- Provoke (barricade 8, rebuke 5, toughness 10) – main skill in that combination, very useful because it recharges very fast and when you’ll do enough damage you’ll always have it active
- Whirling Strike (critical strike 12, fortitude 12, reinforced armor 12)
Some points in survival, dodge, deadly strike
Ranged (thrown weapon):
- Take Aim( critical shot 8,penetrate 1)
- Shrapnel Blast (bleed 8, penetrate 6, quick draw 10)
- Flurry (critical shot 14, cunning renewal 12, ricochet 12)
The rest the same as the ranger on bow
Before ending:
- as spells I use: spirit embrace that gives me the resistance I need and with the survival skill I can use some items that give me other bonuses than resistance, but I pay attention to max them to 80%(very important); the other spell is wrath of ice for freezing enemy, because I have 3 melee and 1 range in my party; the curse that I use is cripple
There are many builds and I don’t say that these are the best, they are just the common ones. Feel free to post on comment your builds and strategies in order to get a complete guide.
