As you progress through Dungeon Siege 2 you’ll no doubt find some blues, yellows and even purple loot items. The feeling of finding these items can be addictive and it can start you down the path of creating your “god” character. Obviously, your gear determines the effectiveness of your character so finding the great loot is in your best interest.
This guide focuses on maximizing your magical find chances and finding magical drops more consistently. While the magical drop % is a little hard to grasp, I’ll go over it in greater detail.
Magical Find %
Magical items can be dark blue, light blue (rare), yellow (set) or purple (unique) grades of weapons/gear. By increasing your magical find chance you will be improving your ability to find these items.
Finding an item that gives “+35% Chance to Find Magical Items” does not mean that you will now receive a 1/3 chance of finding a magical item, it simply means that you have a better chance then you did before you had it equipped. You can equip your character with +720% to find magical items but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be finding a magical item on each loot drop he receives. You can really only maximize your magical find % and see improvements in your loot drops, you will never have a perfect chance of finding magical items.
Where Does it Work?
Improving your magical find chance improves your ability to find magical items in Chests, Urns/Barrels, Bookcases (you can find uniques in bookcases) and off monster kills. Bosses not only drop more than 1 loot drop but they have an inheritably higher chance of dropping magical items. This obviously is more potent on the storyline boss mobs such as Dark Wizards, Valdis, etc.
There are certain mobs in the game that have special loot pools. The Mimic chests seem to drop loot equivalent of a storyline boss and the randomly spawning thief will drop 1 rare every few seconds when being hit constantly. Integrating the Mimic chest into loot runs is a good idea because of the ample amounts of loot he tends to drop.
How do I Boost my Magical Find
The last thing you want to do is go through the game and try to find items that will boost your magical find. Trying to find them can be infuriating and can take a very long time resulting in minimal degrees of success. What you do want to look for is enchantable rings, spellbooks and amulets. The only variations of enchantable stuff you want is Exceptional or Legendary, the rest aren’t worth your time.
When you get to Veteran mode you can buy Prismatic Baubles (+15% to magical find) and Rainbow Trinkets (+5% to magical find) from the Reagent vendors at any of the towns. Prismatic Baubles are more ‘bang for your buck’ since they take up 2 enchantable slots and give you 15% while Rainbow Trinkets only gives 5% with 1 slot.
You can find these reagents killing monsters or you can just visit the Reagent vendor a lot of times (allow me stress ‘a lot’). What I tend to do is go to Eirulan, save the game and check the reagent vendor for either Prismatic Baubles or Rainbow Trinkets. If he doesn’t have any, I go to the options menu and click ‘exit’. Then I re-enter the game with my character to reload the reagents for sale and check again. You will be repeating this process a great deal to find what you need.
When you’re done finding your Prismatic Baubles and Rainbow trinkets visit the Enchanter in Eirulan (the one with a hand above her head) and you can enchant a Legendary or Exceptional item with the reagents you’ve picked up. Don’t waste your time putting the Prismatic Baubles on Exceptional enchantable items. Only use the Prismatics on Legendary enchantable items, this way you can stack 8 of them on any one ring, amulet or spellbook for a +120% chance to magical find. Use the Rainbow Trinkets for the Exceptional enchantable items you find to give you +45% chance to magical find.
If you do the math one character can have up to +720% to magical find off only enchantable items. This means that they could further improve that percentage by finding unique or set gear that has magical find to it. At max (depending on your character class and unique gear available) you have the chance of improving that to around 800% to magical find for each character in your party.
Who Do I Kill?!?!
Now that you are well stocked up on magical find you’ll want to take advantage of this by giving all the magical find gear to your damage dealers. It is rumored that the magical find percentage is taken from the character in your party who deals the killing blow. I’ve not seen massive consistency with this and I’d love more clarification. However, we’ll play the odds and take that strategy as I’ve seen moderately good returns from it.
The best place to find the loot is from the Upper Zaramoth’s Horns to Valdis. There are a ton of bosses there and the monsters just come in large packs. More mini-bosses means a better chance to find great loot. Though people will argue that killing large bosses (Valdis, Dark Wizards) can bring substantial loot drops, the time it takes to kill some of the bosses can be very long and annoying. Rather then going through all that you may have improved loot chances to simply kill monsters and mini-bosses outside.
Another good place is starting in the Azunite desert or the Kithraya Caverns. There aren’t so many mini-bosses but there are a lot of low hit point monsters that can be quickly dispatched. With such a high magical find you can find uniques and sets off very common mobs and the quicker they die, the more loot you find.
If you’re resistant enough to death magic you may way to play in multiplayer and find a Mimic Chest close to a portal (Windstone Fortress’s Eastern Gatehouse comes to mind). Mimics drop storyline boss loot and only use Death magic so if you are resistant enough to Death Magic and perhaps have a high life steal %, you could auto attack while you get a sandwich and have great loot drops when you get back. =)
Conclusion
Improving your magical find can take a lot of preparation and patience while waiting for those Prismatic Baubles to appear in the Reagent vendors. Finding enough Prismatic Baubles to equip an entire party of 6 with 4-6 legendary enchantable items will take a very long time as you’ll notice pretty quickly that they don’t show up in the store all that often. After you get a few Legendary or Exceptional rings enchanted with magical find it’s nice to see your progress by killing a few monsters and seeing what you can find.
At this point I don’t even pickup rare items anymore and most of the set and unique gear in the game I either have, or have thrown away. Gold is devalued at the higher levels and when you find an item you don’t want you can just leave it on the ground because selling it isn’t really that important.
On a side note…
It’s actually kind of ironic. When you look for that good loot you have to sacrifice equipment slots on your characters to wear things that boost your magical find percentage. So in your search to become a ‘god’ character you are actually weakening yourself in the process. You’ll coast through the game so easy with or without magical find gear equipped that when you find all the crazy level gear and you hit level 100, you’ve got all this great gear and nothing even moderately challenging to kill. Oh well, its fun to find at least. =)
